Victoria Falls

Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park is Zambia’s smallest national park but probably the most visited.  Situated within the park, is one of the natural wonders of the world: Victoria Falls, known locally as ‘the smoke that thunders’ (Mosi-oa-Tunya).

From the park entrance a network of paths lead through thick vegetation to various viewpoints of the falls - get a panoramic view of the falls from the Knife Edge, Falls Bridge, Boiling Point, the Power Station and the various gorges. The sight is particularly magnificent on a moonlit night.

There are also a variety of activities to do here such as a helicopter flight along the river and for the thrill seeker, try a bungee jump, gorge swing, abseil or the Flying Fox cable slide!

When planning your visit to the Falls it is worth considering whether you want to see the them in full flood when the the roar of the water is overwhelming and you will get wet from the amount of spray. Alternatively you can visit when the falls are almost down to a trickle which allows you to see more of the actual rock formation and activities such as white water rafting are at their most exciting (due to the lower water level, the rocks are closer to the surface making a more turbulent ride!). You may also get the chance to swim right up to the edge of the falls, an activity available for only 4 months of the year when the currents are not too strong.

Which ever time of year you go, a helicopter flight is worth doing as the sight of the falls and gorges is fantastic from the air.

A morning game drive in the national park offers the chance to see rhinoceros, elephants, giraffe, hippo, warthog, baboon and a variety of game including zebra, eland, lechwe and impala.

Boat trips on the mighty Zambezi gives a different perspective on the animals visiting the waters' edge for a drink, and a chance to see the animals that live in the river such as hippo and crocodile. A sunset cruise is the perfect way to end your day...
