Kruger National Park is a
treasure chest of wonderment: it has something to offer everyone, be it
experienced or first-time safari goer, hardy adventurer or well-heeled
traveller. It is one of the best-known wildlife reserves in the world and
the oldest in Africa, and spans 350km from north to south, 60 km from east
to west (roughly the size of Wales). Nowhere else in the world will you
encounter such diversity of animal and plant life. Eco-systems within the
Kruger Park are highly varied: six rivers feed the park, an area that
encompasses an astonishing 16 vegetation zones including 1,980 plant
species and 300 tree species. There is no ‘best time’ to see game as
different seasons bring different delights: during the winter dry season
(April - September) water is restricted to rivers and waterholes and game
tends to congregate in these areas. Visibility is good as the vegetation
has died down. During the wetter summer months (October to March) the
rains make everything lush and green, and calves and cubs abound.
Alternatively stay in more
luxurious surroundings in a private lodge in Sabi Sands such as Elephant Plains,
Chitwa Chitwa or Rhino Post lodges.
Staying in a private game reserve allows
you the opportunity to go off road in search of animals tracks (game drive
must stay on the roads in government-run parks such as Kruger), and they
also conduct bush walks which gives you a different view of the bush - the
guide will be able to show you in detail the different 'spoor' (trails, foot
prints and dung droppings) left by the animals as well as taking the time to
point out the local flora and small fauna such as insects which are missed
when game viewing from a vehicle.
There are no fences between Sabi and Kruger
so the animals are free to roam between the two areas. |
