Of all places in the world to dive, South Africa must win the crown for having the most diverse marine life. From the cool waters off the Cape to the tropical reefs at Sodwana Bay in the north, the marine life inhabiting these waters is as varied as the temperature! The Cape: British divers will feel right at home in the kelp forests and rocky seabeds. Look out for seals, catsharks and the odd penguin. If you're really lucky you may see a Great White cruise by, otherwise guarantee a sighting with a cage dive. Water temperature dips to 8oC in winter, with maximum around 20oC in summer. Durban area: Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal are shark Mecca's. At different times of the year you may see Hammerheads, Tigers, Ragged-tooth, Giant Guitar, Black tips and Zambezis... Aliwal also boasts a variety of reefs and a couple of wrecks. We recommend divers here are at least PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent with a minimum of 30 dives. Water temperatures range from 26oC in summer to 17oC in winter (the dip in temperature heralds the approach of the Sardine Run). Sodwana Bay: Set in the St. Lucia Marine Reserve, it features tropical reefs and their accompanying inhabitants. This is a photographers' paradise and offers a greater chance of seeing Mantas and Whale sharks. Water temperatures range from around 20oC in winter to 27oC in Summer. |
