Pomene Lodge is situated in an eco-nature reserve approximately 5 hours' drive north of Inhambane. This is an unspoilt area with beautiful beaches set against a mangrove area. The road to Pomene is mildly challenging being un-tarred and a 4-wheel drive vehicle is essential. However, far from detracting from its appeal it makes up the adventure of visiting this area!

This is one of the few areas in Mozambique when wild animals can be seen on land and they include Vervet monkeys, Baboons, small antelope and bird species. A sunset cruise along the estuary makes a lovely end to the day. The rare Dugong lives in these waters, as does a pod of Humpback dolphins.

Pomene Lodge is owned by Barra Lodge in Inhambane and they can arrange transfers by air and road between the two lodges (or Flamingo Water Lodge).

A visit to Pomene can be combined with a holiday to Inhambane to give you the best diving Mozambique offers: a combination of the big and the beautiful!

Dive Sites:

Rappies Playstation

Depth: 10 to 20 metres

Rappie is a huge Bass who has made his home on this reef. His playstation consists of many swim-throughs and tunnels, making this an interesting dive even without the plentiful reef life. Nudibranchs abound, as do Anthias (Goldies), fusiliers, snapper, Big-eyes, Stonefish, Moorish idols (Coachmen) and morays.

The Hand

Depth: 20 to 35 metres

Situated on the edge of the continental shelf, this is a stunning dive site! The Hand is made up on a ledge of reef shaped like a giant hand stretching out to sea and plays host to a myriad of reef fish as well as pelagics. Look out for Eagle rays, mantas, Prodigal Son, King mackerel, Kingfish and other gamefish. One dive here will not be enough!

Zambia Shoal

Depth: 15 to 25 metres

A great swathe of reef: if you were to describe a perfect reef, this would be it! Take a variety of soft and hard-corals, throw in a few handfuls of colourful reef fish, flavour with Green turtles and garnish with White tip reef sharks resting on the sand and you have the perfect tropical reef dive! There are plentiful anemones and Anemone fish (Clownfish and Skunk varieties) to entertain, Stonefish to watch out for, Lionfish, big crayfish, snapper, bass, etc.  This site is too big to cover in one dive so it has been split in different areas.
