GENERAL AREA: Maputaland
is situated on KwaZulu Natal's north eastern seaboard and is a diverse
region of forested dunes, wetlands, sandy beaches, woodland and warm seas.
Both bays are set within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St.
Lucia), a World Heritage Site and benefit from having the Maputaland Marine
Reserve offshore.
SODWANA BAY: Sodwana Bay is
home to Africa's southern most coral reefs which host a huge variety of
marine life. The reefs are named by their distance from the lighthouse at Jesser
Point, the launch site for diving in the area. Normally 2 dives per day
however it is possible to enjoy more should the weather, sea and surf
conditions permit.
ROCKTAIL BAY: Situated
north of Sodwana, Rocktail Bay is consists of nearly 40kms of unspoilt,
pristine coastline where waves meet endless stretches of beach and it is
possible to walk for hours without meeting another soul. Only guests staying
at the lodge may dive here.
Turtle Outreach Drives:
Guests at the exclusive Rocktail Bay Lodge can join the resident expert on a
'turtle drive' at low tide. Between mid-October and mid-March female
Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of their
birth and from January to the end of March hatchlings can bee seen on the
drives.
