Of all sharks, Great whites
are perhaps the most breath-taking: enormous in size and powerful enough
to thrust completely out of the water when taking their prey, this
magnificent creature is highly misunderstood and should be respected
rather than feared. Dyer Island and Gyser Rock are breeding grounds for
Cape fur seals of which there are currently around 50,000. The seals
offer a highly nutritious diet for Great whites and the aptly named
'Shark Alley' near the fishing village of Gansbaai is the hub of Great
white shark viewing. The sharks are surface feeders by nature ensuring
spectacular surface action for divers and non-divers alike.
Specialist trips can be
arranged to see Great whites breaching (with renowned shark photographer
Chris Fallows), and also Mako and Blue sharks.
'Normal' diving is
conducted along the shoreline and there are a number of wrecks to
explore especially in Smitswinkel Bay where 5 wrecks were scuttled in
the early 1970's to form an artificial reef.
